The Humble and Lowly Do Not Commit Adultery and Sexual Immorality

In the last post, I began to examine the importance of associating with the humble and lowly. It is human nature to desire credit and attention for ourselves. I suppose the desire isn't all bad. After all, God created us to be social beings. However, the flesh, devil, and the world tend to pervert that natural tendency, and when it does, we usually reap the benefits of it (Ephesians 2:2-3). Thankfully those who wrote the various books of Scripture have left behind some guidelines to follow. With the help of God's Spirit, we can succeed through this maze of confusion.

"Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not mind high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Do not be wise in your own conceits." Romans 12:16
Setting our minds on humble things isn't what comes natural to most of us. In my personal experience, It has only been in recent history that I have overcome this temptation and mastered it. For many years I was a slave to my lustful passions. I began at the age of 12, and by the time I was grown it was a huge problem. After I found Christ in College, God started a process that has been purging me of this inordinate desire, but just like drawing out poison, it was slow and tedious. Fighting Sexual immorality and adultery would be easier if we weren't surrounded and encouraged by so much lust, inordinate behavior, and desire. Right now I want to look at two elements of the fruit of the flesh, adultery and sexual immorality. One thing about it is that the humble and lowly do not do these things.

"This I say then, walk in the Spirit, and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary to one another: so that you cannot do the things that you have in mind. But if you are led of the Spirit, you are not under the law. Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, contention, jealousies, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envy, murder, drunkenness, reveling, and things like this: of which I tell you now, as I have told you in time past, that they who exercise and practice such things will not inherit the Kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. And they that belong to the "anointed one" (Christ) have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not glory without reason, challenging one another, envying one another." Galatians 5:16-26

Adultery and Sexual Immorality is A Sin Against God

Adultery and sexual immorality are both symptoms of a deeper problem. If someone is involved in these sins, they either have never known God, or have forgotten all about Him. Humble and lowly people seek first the Kingdom of God and the righteousness that Jesus prescribed in the "Sermon on the Mount" (Matthew 5-7). Adultery and sexual immorality are sins against God's original plan for humanity and the prescribed design for the family. It wasn't long after the "Fall of Man" (Genesis 3) that men began to stray from this purpose and follow worldly desires.

Adultery and Sexual Immorality is a Sin Against Your Neighbor

Adultery is also a sin against your neighbor. God has taught us that the first and greatest commandment is to love the Lord our God with all of our soul, mind, and strength. Then, we are to follow the second commandment, which is like the first, and that is to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:34-40). When we commit adultery or sexual immorality, we are sinning first against God and second against our neighbor. Sexual immorality usually involves more than one person. Even if you are masturbating, you are involving whoever is in the image that stimulated you even though they don't know it. "Anything" outside of God's standard for a one-man one-woman marriage falls under this category. Pornography, fornication, adultery, polygamy, homosexuality, rape, incest, pedophilia, bestiality and anything that ventures beyond God's design is outside of the bounds of God's righteousness and desire for His children. God is our designer, and He knows what is best for our bodies and our souls. Humble and lowly folk honor God and their neighbor, even when they are tempted not to do so.

Adultery and Sexual Immorality is a Sin Against Our Own Bodies

Sexual sin takes a toll not only on our relationship with God and our neighbor, but also with ourselves. I don't know why or how, but there seems to be a physical degradation of the body when it is engaged in sexual misconduct. I suppose that is because there are limitations for us all with the body and soul according to God's design. When we overindulge or sin willfully against God in this area, our bodies suffer.

"Flee sexual immorality! “Every sin that a man does is outside the body,” but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body."  1 Corinthians 6:18 WEB

Sexual sin is one that is detrimental to many people. There are thousands of families and friendships that have dissolved due to this. One thing is for sure, you won't catch the humble and lowly involved. And, if you associate with them, you will avoid it too.
